Study in Switzerland: The Schools, Universities and Courses Families Ask Us About

As an educational consultant, we sometimes get asked: "Is Switzerland actually better than England or does it just look better in the brochure?". As you might be guessing - there is no straight answer.

Swiss boarding schools

Switzerland is home to some of the best known boarding schools in the world. Institut Le Rosey divides its year between a campus in Rolle on Lake Geneva and a winter campus in Gstaad, while Aiglon College sits high in the Alpine village of Villars. Most leading Swiss schools teach the IB Diploma, and many add the French Baccalaureate, A levels or the Swiss Maturité.

What families are really choosing is the mix. A child might share a boarding house with friends from Brazil, Japan and Norway, move between English and French in the same afternoon and spend the weekend on the slopes. Students tend to come home more independent, more confident and very often bilingual.

The top end is expensive. For 2026/27, Le Rosey lists boarding and tuition at CHF 159,600 a year, and senior boarding at Aiglon reaches around CHF 168,000. Not every Swiss school costs that much, though, and the right choice depends far more on how your child learns and lives than on a famous name.

Swiss universities and the courses worth a look

This is the part that surprises parents most, because the strongest Swiss universities are public and remarkably good value.

For engineering, computer science, maths and physics, ETH Zurich is the name to know. It was placed 8th in the world in the latest QS World University Rankings, published in June 2026, and remains the highest ranked university in continental Europe. EPFL in Lausanne came 22nd. One detail to know early: most bachelor's degrees at ETH are taught in German and at EPFL in French, while many master’s programmes run in English. There are plenty of Bachelor's degree options in English too.

Business is another strong area. The University of St Gallen's Master in Strategy and International Management was ranked first in the Financial Times Masters in Management ranking in September 2026, for a record fifteenth time.

If your child dreams of luxury hotels, events or the wider hospitality world, Switzerland leads the field. In the QS 2026 subject ranking for hospitality and leisure management, the top five institutions are all Swiss, including EHL, Les Roches and Glion, and their programmes are taught in English. For international relations, law and diplomacy, Geneva is hard to beat, with the University of Geneva and the Geneva Graduate Institute sitting in a city that hosts the United Nations in Europe and dozens of international organisations.

Switzerland suits a family when the language, the course and the budget all point in the same direction.

There are practical benefits too. Students live in the centre of Europe, in one of the safest countries in the world, surrounded by three national languages. Students from outside the EU can work up to 15 hours a week during term once they have lived in Switzerland for six months, and full time in the holidays. After graduating, non-EU students can apply for a six-month permit to look for a job. The honest flip side is the cost of living. Zurich and Geneva are among the most expensive cities in the world, so rent and daily life, rather than tuition, usually decide the budget.

How EducAd Consulting can help

We have kept this guide short on purpose, because the details are different for every child. Entry requirements for A Level and IB students, language certificates, entrance exams at some universities, visas, and the choice between a Swiss boarding school and a university route are exactly what we go through together in a personal consultation.

We help families find the right school, compare Swiss options side by side with the UK, build a shortlist of courses that genuinely fit, and plan every step of the application. You can read more about our university admissions support.
