UCAS University Application Dates for 2027

A month-by-month guide for students and parents navigating the 2027 university admissions cycle

If your child is applying to a UK university for September 2027 entry, the process has already started. UCAS applications for the 2027 cycle opened on 13 May 2026, and the window for submitting completed applications began on 1 September 2026. That means the clock is ticking, and knowing every deadline in advance is the difference between a calm application and a last-minute scramble.

This guide sets out every key date in the UCAS 2027 cycle, from the moment applications open through to Clearing and final enrolment. Bookmark it, share it with your child, and check back regularly as we update it throughout the year.

May to August 2026: The Preparation Phase

The UCAS application window opens on 13 May 2026, but completed applications cannot be submitted until 1 September. This four-month gap is your preparation window, and it is arguably the most important period in the entire cycle.

During this phase, students should be researching courses and universities, attending open days and virtual events, and beginning to draft their personal statement. Under the new UCAS format introduced for 2026 entry, the personal statement consists of three structured questions with a combined 4,000-character limit and a minimum of 350 characters per answer. Starting the brainstorming process now gives students time to produce multiple drafts before the September submission window opens.

For students considering Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry or veterinary science, this phase is even more critical. Their deadline falls on 15 October 2026, which means the personal statement, reference and all five UCAS choices need to be finalised by early autumn.

September to October 2026: The Early Submission Window

From 1 September 2026, completed applications can be submitted through UCAS. Schools and colleges typically set internal deadlines several weeks before the official UCAS deadline, so teachers have time to review applications and submit references.

The first major external deadline is 15 October 2026 at 6pm UK time. This is the equal consideration deadline for all courses at Oxford and Cambridge, as well as most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science at every university. This is a hard deadline. Late applications to these courses are not accepted, and you can only apply to one of Oxford or Cambridge in any given cycle.

Students applying for courses with admissions tests should note that test windows may open before or around this deadline. Oxford has restructured its admissions tests in recent years, so candidates should check the specific requirements for their chosen course and book their test in good time.

November to January 2027: The Standard Submission Window

For the majority of undergraduate courses, the equal consideration deadline is 14 January 2027 at 6pm UK time. All applications received by this point must be given equal consideration by universities, regardless of whether they arrived on 1 September or 14 January.

That said, submitting earlier within this window is generally advisable. Some universities and courses operate rolling admissions or have limited places, and an earlier submission means an earlier decision. It also reduces the stress of competing with last-minute technical issues or school reference delays.

Students who applied to Oxford or Cambridge by the October deadline will typically have their interviews in December 2026. Oxford conducts all interviews online for 2027 entry, while Cambridge sets the format college by college, with some interviews held in person and others online. Shortlisted candidates for Oxford will be notified of the outcome on 12 January 2027.

February to July 2027: Offers, Decisions and Extras

After the January deadline, universities begin making offers. Students will receive decisions through UCAS Track. Some offers will be unconditional, but most will be conditional on achieving specific A-Level grades or equivalent qualifications.

UCAS Extra opens on 25 February 2027. This is available to students who used all five choices and either received no offers or declined all their offers. Extra allows students to add one additional choice at a time, free of charge, without starting a new application. It remains open until early July 2027.

Students must respond to their offers by the deadline set by UCAS. They will need to select a firm choice (their first preference) and an insurance choice (a back-up with lower entry requirements). The deadline for replying varies depending on when the last offer was received, but is typically in May or June 2027.

August 2027: Results Day and Clearing

A-Level results day falls in mid-August 2027. This is when conditional offers are either confirmed or become unmet. Students whose grades match or exceed their firm offer are confirmed at that university. Those who narrowly miss can sometimes still be accepted through the university's own discretion.

For students who exceed their firm offer significantly, UCAS Adjustment allows them to search for places at universities with higher entry requirements, while keeping their original offer as a safety net. Adjustment runs for a limited window around results day.

Clearing opens in early July 2027 and runs until late October 2027. It matches students who do not hold a place with courses that still have vacancies. Clearing has evolved significantly in recent years and is now a legitimate route into excellent universities rather than a last resort.
